Organizing in now going on to get people to New York City for the Republican National Conference protests. The conference and protests will start on August 29 to September 2.

Cost for travel to New York City is an obvious issue. If people want to go, now is the time to plan and organize.

As of mid-june the price for travel from Pensacola to NYC roundtrip is:
Air (Airtran) $225
Bus (Greyhound) $175
Train (Amtrak) $287

If enough people were interested, a bus could be arranged. And there may be buses leaving from Mobile or Tallahassee already that people could hop on.

There are links for housing in the New York area on the "RNC Not Welcome" web site listed below.

If anyone is interested in organizing locally around the RNC convention (or DNC in late July) feel free to contact us at the e-mail contact

On Sunday, August 29, one of the biggest and most important protests in a
generation will take place in New York City: a massive march and rally on the
eve of the Republican National Convention, organized by United for Peace and
Justice.

If you’re alarmed by the direction that the Bush Administration has taken this
country, you will want to make your voice heard at this historic gathering,
where we will march against war, greed, hate and lies. Already, many thousands
of individuals and hundreds of groups – anti-war, civil rights, immigrant,
religious, labor, feminist, environmental, and many more – are planning to
participate in this demonstration.

United for Peace and Justice has just launched a new section of our website with
resources to help you mobilize for the August 29 RNC protest. At
http://www.unitedforpeace.org/rnc you will find:

* Downloadable leaflets that you can photocopy and distribute in your community
* An online endorsement form
* Links to housing and ride boards
* Information on ordering posters
* Updated information on our fight for a protest permit

The Republican National Convention – and the protests – will be covered by media
outlets around the world. It is vital that we bring the largest possible number
of people to New York City on Sunday, August 29 to speak out against the actions
and plans of the Bush Administration. Additionally, United for Peace and Justice
will have a presence at the Democratic National Convention in Boston in late
July, to once again promote our vision of politics based on justice, fairness,
and peaceful solutions to conflict. (See http://www.unitedforpeace.org for
details about the Democratic Convention activities.)

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

1) Encourage your friends, coworkers, and family to join you in NYC on Sunday,
August 29. Forward this email to everyone you know who cares about peace and
justice.

2) Start making your plans now to come to New York City for the August 29 RNC
protest. Visit http://www.unitedforpeace.org/rnc for links to ride and housing
boards.

3) Ask your organization – be it a community group, a labor union, a church, or
other organization – to endorse the August 29 RNC protest. Visit
http://www.unitedforpeace.org/rnc to endorse.

4) Photocopy and distribute leaflets for the August 29 RNC protest. Visit
http://www.unitedforpeace.org/rnc to download.

5) Donate! We urgently need to raise $200,000 to make the August 29 RNC protest
a success. Make an online credit card donation at
http://www.unitedforpeace.org/donate or call our office at 212-868-5545 to make
a credit card donation by phone. You can also mail checks payable to United for
Peace & Justice to P.O. Box 607, Times Square Station, New York, NY 10108.

The war is heating up against the Anarchists. These are some things I picked up off the Yahoo News search. It's an obvious attempt to demonize.

"New Yorkers! Beware of the anarchists! Don't worry about those guys with rubber bullets shooting at you. Never mind the tear gas or concussion grenades being shot overhead. Forget about the snipers everywhere! Pay not attention to the people with batons keeping you from exercising your human rights to freedom of speech. Forget all of that. There are anarchists with slingshots! Beware New Yorkers! Anarchists with slingshots plotting to destroy New York! It's true, I read it on a message board on the internet."

Sometimes it's hard to believe just how silly they sound. "Fox News Alert! Anarchists have been seen wearing black! We at Fox News are all for freedom of speech, but this is going too far!"

Anarchists Pursue Chaos at GOP Convention
Tuesday, July 13, 2004

Republicans Get NYC Party-Planning Lessons
NEW YORK- Radical protesters are reportedly trying to cause chaos at the Republican National Convention (search) in New York City at the end of August.

Reports show that fringe groups are hatching a plot on the Internet, telling people how to attack and trick police with the ultimate goal of evacuating Madison Square Garden (search). The suggestions include everything from throwing marbles in the path of police-mounted horses to going to shooting ranges before heading to the convention so that their clothes will reek of gunpowder and trick bomb-sniffing dogs on the subways and commuter trains.

New York City police (search) say they are worried about the tactics diverting their time and resources from preventing authentic attacks, and add that they are preparing for "black blocs" of anarchists who cover their face with bandanas and vandalize corporate targets.

Anarchists Seek to Foil Homeland Security
LAST UPDATE: 7/12/2004 11:28:10 AM

United Press International

Anarchists have decided to create mayhem at the Republican National Convention in New York, the New York Daily News reported Monday.

Internet chatter on how to bring the city and convention, from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, to a halt has city, state and federal agencies bracing for false alarms.

And the prospect of having to protect against false alarms by U.S.-based anarchists as well as Muslim extremists enrages law officers.

"Where is the legitimate protest in trying to endanger the public?" Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly asked. "It is the height of irresponsibility."

Among anarchists' Internet suggestions: throw marbles under the hoofs of police horse, use slingshots to sting bomb-sniffing dogs and spend time at a shooting range to absorb the smell of gunpowder to be detected as a suicide bomber -- something that could halt trains and force the evacuation of parts of the city or convention.

"It is important that the police call in all possible resources to investigate the situation," said one anarchist posting. "This will result in the maximum disruption. With any luck, Madison Square Garden will be evacuated."

Mayor Bloomberg warned anarchists yesterday to keep away from the Republican National Convention, vowing that the city will clamp down quickly on troublemakers bent on disruptions.

"My first concern is to protect the civil rights of the 8.1 million people that live here," Bloomberg said, after the Daily News revealed schemes by some protesters to halt trains or even force cops to evacuate Madison Square Garden.

"If people want to come here and protest, we also want to accommodate them, but nobody is going to take away the rights of our citizens to go about their business, go to school, go to work," Bloomberg said.

The mayor acknowledged there's a "variety of ways" fringe groups "can hurt this city." But the NYPD is on top of it, he said.

The devious tactics being promoted include Internet postings, revealed by The News, that explain how to use gunpowder or ammonium nitrate to fool bomb- sniffing dogs on trains.

"The things that were talked about in that article are things that we have been thinking about and planning to respond to - if they should occur - for a very long time," the mayor said.

But the New York Civil Liberties Union and several protest groups said there is a danger that the city could overreact.

"We're concerned that any reports about a small number of people, possibly engaging in illegal activity, not be exaggerated and not be used as a pretext to restrain peaceful protest," said NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman.

The National Lawyers Guild, which is offering to defend protesters arrested during the convention, charged that the NYPD was spreading misinformation.

"It's intended to create negative stereotypes so New Yorkers think, 'Omigod. There are going to be violent protests,'" said Heidi Boghosian, the group's executive director. "It has the effect of frightening people of all ages across the country who may want to come to the convention and peacefully demonstrate."

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly called on peaceful protest leaders to speak out against violent groups.
