It's been called Apartheid Wall, Separation Barrier, Security Fence. Come see a model the size of one of the concrete slabs (24 feet x 11 feet) used in the structure that Israel is building in the Occupied Palestinian West Bank. Maps and photos will also be available, and coordinators with the Stop the Wall Campaign will be on hand to answer questions. |

PENSACOLA -- Coordinators for the Seattle-based Stop the Wall Campaign will visit UWF on Tues., Feb. 15 to display a 24-foot-tall model of the Wall that Israel is building in the Palestinian West Bank.
Stop the Wall Campaign coordinators John Reese and Erica Kay will display the Wall model, photos and maps from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Feb. 15 in the University of West Florida's Free Speech Zone, just west of the Campus Police and The Commons between buildings 18 and 21. Also on hand will be local members of the Florida Palestine Solidarity Network, the coalition that invited the campaign to Pensacola.
After the Wall exhibit, Kay and Reese will give a presentation at 7 p.m. at the Center for Social Justice, 1603 North Davis Hwy. They will show the film "The Wall" and will discuss the Wall's detrimental impact on the agriculture, environment and economics of Palestine.
The Wall model, constructed from PVC plumbing pipe and tarp, is the full height of the actual Wall currently being built by Israel on Palestinian land. The model will serve as a wake-up call to Pensacolians who do not know about the Wall or have not realized its enormity, said local organizer Lauren Anzaldo.
"There is so much misinformation and deception surrounding this Wall," Anzaldo said. "It has been called a security barrier; it has been called a fence. Peace activists call it the Apartheid Wall because it will effectively solidify the apartheid system in place in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. This display will show that, yes, it's a barrier: it's a barrier to peace and must be stopped."
In July 2004, the International Court of Justice at The Hague, the highest court in the world, ruled that the Wall is illegal and should be halted immediately. It also ruled that Israel should pay restitution to those Palestinians who have already suffered because of the Wall's route. Israel chose to ignore that ruling and continued constructing the Wall and issung evacuation orders to Palestinians living in its path.
The Wall does not follow the Green Line, the 1967 Armistice Line that delineates the West Bank from Israel. It cuts into the West Bank and traps Palestinian land on the opposite side, thus de facto confiscating that land from its owners and inhabitors and annexing that land into the state of Israel. The Israeli military has destroyed 500 acres of Palestinian crops and hundreds of homes to make way for the Wall. In some cases, villages have been cut in half by the Wall.

What a good discussion afterwards. Seeing the wall first hand was an incredible experience. Or a model of it. I had no idea how distruptive it was to Palestinian lives. |
