*WASHINGTON**, DC –* Members of the Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) are calling on Democratic members of Congress to vote against an additional $80 billion in funding for Iraq being requested this week by the Bush Administration.

“We call on Congressional Democrats to devise a strategy to expose and oppose the Administration's expected request for a $100 billion supplemental appropriation for the war,” states Tim Carpenter, a longtime peace activist and Director of PDA. “We are joined with the peace movement in a permanent campaign to end funding for this war. We have no objection to funding for body armor that will protect our troops from preventable deaths, but we oppose open-ended funding for an unwinnable war.”

Carpenter contends that Congressional Democrats should demand a timetable and plan for withdrawal in 2005 from President Bush’s administration in exchange for additional funding over the estimated present level of $200 billion.

In a letter, PDA called on Democratic Leadership to press for peace in Iraq with the following four actions:

* Demand a timetable for withdrawal of the troops in Iraq.
* Become a watchdog force for the American public, pressing for
answers on questions about Iraq, such as the number of the Iraqi
dead.
* Sponsor public forums in their districts to hear public debate on
military withdrawal, concerns of military families, and release
information on the local budget consequences of spending on the
war and occupation.
* Actively support the peace movement, including dissenting soldiers
and reservists, by joining rallies and demonstrations, signing
public declarations, opposing any repression of dissent under the
Patriot Act or other mechanisms designed to stifle vigorous
dissent and discussion of alternatives.

The letter was sent to Current Democrat Party Chair, Terry McAuliffe and Candidates to Party Chair, Denver Mayor Wellington Webb, former Presidential canididate Howard Dean, Texas Rep. Martin Frost, Democratic strategist Donnie Fowler, former Indiana Rep. Tim Roemer, former Ohio state Democratic Party Chair David Leland and Simon Rosenberg, head of the New Democrat Network.
